I started with a sniff test, eliminating any options that gave me a headache. St. Tropez passed easily. I then followed the guidelines for a smooth application: exfoliating my skin 6 to 8 hours prior, showering right beforehand to remove lotions or oils and drying my skin well. I pumped a quarter-size dollop of the mousse onto a self-tanning mitt and applied it to my left inner arm along with dollops of the other self-tanners. I let the products sit for 3 hours, then swabbed them with a cotton swab; I slept in a white t-shirt overnight and then showered to rinse off the rest of the product. All along, I took notes on how they smelled, how they dried and felt on my skin and how even the guide color looked if there was one. Over the next 5 days, I moisturized and monitored the swatches to see how long they lasted.
